Complete Colorado's website picked up a story out of Greeley that the potential exists to cancel the city election this year for the positions of mayor and 3 city council positions. With the mayor and council exploring every possible way to increase taxes and fees, and spend money lavishly (such as a $600,000 repaving of the city parking lot?), there should definitely be opponents. Will they emerge?
Let's look at the four incumbents. They are, Mayor Tom Norton, and council members Mike Finn, Robb Casseday, and Charles Archibeque.
Charlie Archibeque is well-liked in his ward and would probably be the most difficult councilman to challenge. But he could be beat. The very fact that the city wants to raise taxes or spending during these times is cause enough. Sitting in on the city council discussions causes you to realize the fact that there is an overall reluctance to cut fees, regulation and taxes in Greeley. He can be beat.
Mike Finn is a relative newcomer to the city council. Again, Mike seems to have support from his constituents, but is reluctant to slash, cut and repeal. He seems to take a "managed approach" which translates to business as usual. Whatever city manager Roy Otto wants, Roy Otto gets. Finn may be nice, but he is not looking for ways to eliminate spending and regulations.
Robb Casseday is the newest city council member. He was appointed to take Maria Secrest's place when she was appointed to another position. Local demoncrat Ken Storck wants to be in office. He has run against Scott Renfroe, and also put in his resume to backfill Jim Riesberg's open position. When Maria Secrest left city council, Storck wanted her seat on the council as well. So what does this have to do with Casseday? Casseday was the appointment for Secrest in place of Storck. And liberal Storck tells us that Casseday is a good appointment. Enough said.
Tom Norton won the last election by only a few hundred votes against a relatively anemic opponent. Norton has been a politician for years, and has done nothing to reduce taxes, fees, and regulation in the city of Greeley. He admitted this publicly in a recent meeting, despite promising to look at how to do it in his campaign for mayor. His wife Kay (UNC leader) is as liberal as they come, endorsing in-state tuition for illegals, and expressing overt support for those that push the gay and lesbian agenda. Norton lives in the same house. Need any more be said than this?
Without opposition, these four leaders will continue to run Greeley. We can talk, criticize, and argue all we want. But the truth is this. Until good people start laying down their tv remotes and sacrificing their time and focus, liberal opportunists will continue to run this city. You may not think yourself to be candidate material. But remember, our nation was not birthed by aristocrats but by everyday people. Do you want more of the same, or do you want change? It's time to put up or shut up, and the liberals have things in their corner. Will you at least stand up and be counted?
