Today is a bit of a news wrap-up. So much is happening behind the scenes, and of course the huge story of the mainstream is the ongoing debt ceiling and budget debate. Sam believes the Debt-o-crats will probably get enough RINO's to go along with them on a plan, and it will perpetuate more business-as-usual on Capitol Hill. It's sad, but true. A really big story would be if the House of Representatives said no to debts and deficits, and didn't raise the salary cap. Now that would be huge, because it would denote the fact that we actually had statesmen and women in Congress that stood up for America instead of letting it slide downhill. The Repubicans have put forth a "symbolic" plan in the House, but they know it's in name only. In fact, they are already preparing contingency plans, knowing it won't work. And they don't have the courage to say no.
We must remember however, that while the big media pundits keep our focus on all of the same stories, other things are happening behind the scenes. For example, you may not know that less than a month ago the House of Representatives voted to approve a new patent law, changing the way patents have been handled in the U.S. since 1952. Our national patent laws did their best to ensure that the first person that actually had documented proof of an invention was able to patent the product. Under the new law, this will change.
Corporations will now be able to file for patents over individuals, and it will be more difficult for the first inventor to put forth his or her claims of having invented the product and therefore having the rights. This is touted as a positive step. Secondly, U.S. patent laws (that have been criticized as being out of line with the rest of the world) will now be brought into more conformity with Europe and Asia. In short, Congress is busy bringing the U.S. into line with the global community, while weakening individual rights and U.S. individuality.
Who voted for this change? Was it the Debt-o-crats alone? Of course not. Republican Cory Gardner supported this measure with his vote, as did several others. Undoubtedly Obama will sign it into law, and yet further rights of individuals will be harmed in the process. This is why, when there is a large news story on all the major news networks (including the so-called conservative groups), it pays to dig for the other happenings in the world. The "Land of Oz" still has people playing games behind the secret curtain, and somebody needs to pull the cord.
