"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Governemnt can't pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on the ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. ... Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that "the buck stops here." Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."
That statement was made by then-Senator Barack Obama on March 20, 2006 as he explained his vote against raising the debt ceiling to $9 Trillion. The current debt ceiling is $14.3 Trillion, raised there under Obama's leadership. (Of course we know the real numbers are much, much higher and this posturing in D.C. is all smoke and mirrors.) You see, Democrats should be screaming in the streets about Obama's behavior these days. But they won't because their man is in power. At least some conservatives and Republicans have the courage to call out their people in office when they are betrayed by them. And there is plenty of betrayal going on. Will the debt ceiling raise? Probably. Because there are too many "R's" and "D's" that are too much alike.
