Ah, back-to-school season. It's that time of excitement for children, parents and grandparents as they shop and prepare to have the young ones trained in higher learning. The staff and teachers of the schools are excited to have the halls filled with chatter and energy, and friends look forward to reconnecting after a season apart.
How sad then, that District 6 pats itself on the back about the supposed good job they are doing when half the students aren't even above average in their proficiency. Yes, it's true that parents play a huge part in this endeavor, but the fact is that a portion of public education is the commitment to give high opportunity to those that are disadvantaged. So when we fail them, it's huge.
To those that support this failure, we hold you accountable. We will be voting you out in November. We will be looking for board members that will do something for the teachers, the students, and the culture of comfortable failure that has pervaded District 6 for years. They will change it. Greeley Report has heard that there may be those that will run, that care and are willing to change the board. That would be great. Maybe next year's back-to-school season will start with higher hopes, instead of adjusting the "hope scale," to pretend things are all right.
